언어 없는 목소리

“조수가 밀려온다.
파도가 출렁인다.
도자기 공장이 잠긴다.

거기, 우리는 기다린다…”

액트제로(ActZero)는 기후변화 대응을 위한 캠페인의 ‘제0막’, 탄소중립 기후행동의 ‘서막(opening act, prelude)’을 뜻합니다. 우리는 개더링 모스(Gathering Moss) 플랫폼과 연결해 액트제로 쇼케이스를 제주도에서 실행했습니다. 기후행동의 첫걸음으로 액트제로 노지(ActZero Noji)는 해수면 상승과 해양 생태계 교란 문제 등 기후변화에 취약한 상징적인 장소인 ‘노지(bare ground)’를 배경으로 하고 있습니다. 노지는 벽과 지붕이 없는 곳을 뜻하며, 아직 훼손되지 않은 자연 그대로의 모습이 남아 있는 곳입니다. 지구온난화와 사라져 가는 생태문화를 주제로 기후 위기에 대한 경각심을 불러일으키고, 환경 복구를 위한 참여와 연대를 촉구하며 액트제로는 기술, 환경, 디지털 예술이 융합한 행위와 실천을 바탕으로 전통적인 창작과 제작 방식의 변화를 모색합니다.

우리는 탄소중립을 향해 나아가는 예술 실천과 방식을 추구하며 스튜디오 프랙티스 과정에서 적층식 제조(AM, Additive Manufacturing), 즉 3차원 인쇄 기술을 적용한 기기를 개발했습니다. 이를 바탕으로 고점도 세라믹 3D 프린팅이 가능한 기술을 특화하여 한국의 백토(주로 도자 재료로 쓰이는 백색의 흙으로 라틴어 terra alba, 영어 white clay)를 주재료로 한 새로운 형태의 건축적 구조와 디자인, 입체 조형과 모델을 실험했습니다. 이 입체 작품들은 대도시의 상징적 건축물, 기후변화와 환경오염으로 방치된 건물, 산업유산으로 남은 대형 곡물창고, 폐가 등 각각 나름의 전형성을 띤 모형들입니다. 첨단 기술과 공학, 적층식 제조 방식이 예술과 결합하여 3차원 인쇄되었고, 자연 건조된 후 노지로 옮겨졌습니다

지금으로부터 약 170만 년 전, 신생대의 화산활동으로 형성된 섬.
화산에서 분출된 용암이 지표면으로 흘러내리고 식어가고 또다시 쌓이기를 반복하며 지형을 만든 곳.
그 시간의 겹이 응축된 검은 돌들 위.
티 없이 투명하고 맑은 바다, 거침없는 파도, 주변을 에워싸는 듯한 바람을 등지고 백토로 빚어 가느다란 레이어로 겹겹이 만들어진 흰색의 건축 모형들이 현무암 바위 위에 나란히 서 있습니다.

계산에 따라 정교하고 촘촘히 쌓아 올라간 구조의 겹들은 시간의 겹 위에 임시로 머물고 있습니다. 노지에 닿은 해변에 굽기 전 건조 상태로 서 있는 모형들은 자연의 풍광과 극적인 대비를 이루며 밀려오는 파도에 부딪히고 쓰러집니다. 마치 기술의 발전이 쌓아 올린 문명과 산업사회의 연약한 구조를 드러내듯, 밀물과 썰물이 만나는 사이, 점차 시간이 흐름에 따라 파도에 잠기며 바닷속으로 사라집니다.

액트제로 노지는 설치 작품이 잠기는 과정과 일시적이고 덧없는 순간을 영상으로 담아 트랜스미디어로 확장되고 있습니다. 이를 기록한 필름은 간접적인 경험과 관람으로 이어집니다. 흑백의 대비를 통해 자연과 문명의 관계를 은유적으로 표현하며 산업화 이후 지구온난화 문제를 시각적 메시지로 전달하고 있습니다. 이 행위에 기반한 설치는 노지를 위한 ‘서곡(a prelude)’을 들려주며 ‘언어 없는 목소리(a voice without language)’로 울려 퍼질 것입니다.

액트제로는 기후변화에 대응하는 철학이자 모토이며, 행위와 실천입니다. 일상생활에서 탄소중립을 향해 나아가기 위한 도전은 액트제로 챌린지와 함께 현재 온라인에서 동시에 진행되고 있습니다. 수행방식과 도전, 참여와 연대를 위한 슬로건을 내걸고 글로벌 시티즌과 네티즌의 기후행동 동참을 호소합니다.

액트제로의 제작과정에서 핵심적으로 접목된 3D 프린팅 기술은 한계 비용(marginal cost)이 거의 ‘제로’에 가까운 제조 기술의 혁신을 불러왔습니다. 또한, 여전히 무언가를 만들고 생산하는 제작 과정상의 문제점을 해결하고 그 한계를 극복할 수 있는 이상적인 ‘제로 웨이스트(zero waste)’ 방식과 접점을 찾을 수 있습니다. 이러한 기술들이 그간 창작 과정에서 마주한 모순과 부조리한 상황, 제조업 기반의 예술 프로덕션이 직면한 한계에 변화를 가져올 수 있을지 질문하며 방앤리는 지속 가능한 재료, 친환경 에너지, 지역의 생태문화, 그리고 궁극적으로 자연으로의 회귀에 초점을 둔 일련의 창의적인 탄소 중립 예술 활동과 실천을 이어나갈 예정입니다.

A voice without language

“The tide is rolling in.
The waves roar.
The porcelain factory sinks.

There, we wait…”

ActZero refers to ‘act zero’ of the campaign to combat climate change and the ‘opening act, prelude’ of carbon-neutral climate action. We connected with the Gathering Moss platform and held an ActZero showcase in Jeju Island. As the first step in climate action, ActZero Noji is set on ‘bare ground’, a place symbolically vulnerable to climate change, what with the rising sea levels and issue of disturbed marine ecosystems. Noji [Bare ground] means a place without walls and roofs, and it is a place where nature remains untouched. It raises awareness of the climate crisis issues of global warming and disappearing ecological culture; encouraging participation in and solidarity for environmental restoration, ActZero seeks changes in traditional creation and production methods based on the convergence of technology, environment, and digital art.

We pursue artistic practices and methods that move toward carbon neutrality, and in the course of this our studio practice has developed around Additive Manufacturing (AM), that is, devices using 3D printing technology. Based on this, specialising in high-viscosity ceramic 3D printing technology, we experimented with new types of architectural structures and designs, as well as three-dimensional sculptures and models, using Korean ‘Baekto’ (‘terra alba’ in Latin, ‘white clay’ in English) as the main material. These three-dimensional works are models with their own typical features, such as buildings symbolic of large cities, buildings abandoned due to climate change and environmental pollution, large grain warehouses that have survived as our industrial heritage, and abandoned houses. Cutting-edge technology, engineering, and additive manufacturing are combined with art to be 3D printed, air-dried, and then transported to the bare ground.

An island formed by volcanic activity in the Cenozoic Era about 1.7 million years ago.
A place where lava erupted from a volcano, flowed down to the surface and cooled to build up a terrain, layer upon layer.
Over the black stones, where the layers of time are condensed.
Against a backdrop of spotlessly transparent and clear sea, unstoppable waves, and enveloping wind, the white architectural models formed from layer upon layer of white clay stand side by side on the basalt rocks.

The layers of the structures, elaborately and densely built up according to calculations, stand temporarily upon layers of time. The models, which have been dried but not baked, stand where the bare ground meets the beach and are hit and toppled by the surging waves in dramatic contrast to the natural scenery. As if revealing the fragile structure of civilization and industrial society built up by technological development, as the tides ebb and flow, and as time gradually passes, they are drowned by the waves and disappear into the sea.

The temporary and transitory moments in the process of the installation works being submerged are captured in video, expanding ActZero Noji into transmedia. The recording of this is a film that leads you through an indirect viewing experience. The relationship between nature and civilization is expressed metaphorically in the contrast of black and white, and the issue of post-industrial global warming is conveyed as a visual message. The installation based on this act sounds as ‘a prelude’ for the bare ground, and resonates with ‘a voice without language’.

ActZero is a philosophy, motto, action and practice in response to climate change. In conjunction with the challenge to move towards carbon neutrality in everyday life, the ActZero Challenge is being run online. We appeal to global citizens and netizens to participate in climate action under the slogans of method and challenge, participation and solidarity.

3D printing technology, incorporated as a key element in the production process of ActZero, has brought about innovation in manufacturing technology, with a marginal cost close to zero. In addition, a method [and compromise] may still be found that solves the problem of a production process to make something and overcome limitation in an ideal ‘zero waste’ method. Asking whether these technologies can bring about changes in the contradictions and absurdities faced in the creative process and the limitations of manufacturing-based art production, Bang & Lee plan to continue their series of creative carbon-neutral art activities and practices with a focus on sustainable materials, eco-friendly energy, local eco-culture, and ultimately returning to nature.
