ActZero Dune Film

탄소중립(net-zero)을 향한 예술가의 철학이자 실천, 기후행동 예술 프로젝트 ‘액트제로(ActZero)’ 연작을 선보이고 있는 미디어 아티스트 듀오 방앤리는 2021년 제주도 서귀포시 노지에서 실행한 ‘액트제로 노지(ActZero Noji)’에 이어, 2022년 충청남도 태안군 신두리 해안사구에서 ‘액트제로 사구(ActZero Dune)’를 실행했습니다. 

신두리 해안사구는 바람이 실어 온 모래가 갯벌과 육지로 이동하면서 해안에 형성된 국내 최대 규모의 모래 언덕으로 해양생태계의 완충지이며 다양한 동식물의 서식지이기도 합니다. 또한, 바람과 파도를 막아 주거지와 경작지를 보호하고 식수원을 오염을 막는 자연 방파제 기능을 하고 있습니다. ‘액트제로 사구(ActZero Dune)’에서 방앤리는 해안 개발과 해안 침식으로 점점 그 면적이 줄고 있는 자연과 그로 인해 연쇄적인 위협에 노출된 우리의 환경에 주목합니다. 

과거에 비해 급격히 줄어든 사구의 황량하고 적막한 풍경을 배경으로 연약한 모습 가운데 여전히 강인한 사구의 아름다움을 포착해 희망의 메시지를 전달합니다. 기후변화 대응과 환경 복구의 필요성을 강조하며 자연과 인공, 강인함과 연약함, 흑과 백 등 대립적인 관계를 상징적으로 나타내는 영상 작품은 온라인 플랫폼과 3차원 메타버스 공간에서 전시됩니다.

Media artist duo Bang & Lee’s ‘ActZero’ series, a climate action art project presenting artistic philosophy and practice, and climate action towards ‘net zero’ or carbon neutral, consists of ‘ActZero Noji’ [Noji – ‘bare ground’], held out in the open in Seogwipo, Jeju Island in 2021, followed by ‘ActZero Dune’ on the Sinduri Coastal Dunes in Taean, South Chungcheong Province in 2022.

The Sinduri Coastal Sand Dunes are the largest coastal sand dunes in Korea, formed from the sand driven by the wind along the shore and on to the tidal flats and land. They are home to a variety of flora and fauna. In addition, they act as a natural breakwater that blocks the wind and waves to protect residential areas and agricultural land, and prevent contamination of drinking water sources. In ‘ActZero Dune,’ Bang & Lee draw their attention to the serial threats to the coastal dunes, whose area is gradually decreasing due to coastal development and coastal erosion, and our environment.

The camera has captured the still strong beauty of the drastically diminishing dunes, and delivers a message of hope despite the fragile appearance of this bleak and desolate landscape. Emphasizing the need to respond to climate change and to restore the environment, the video works that symbolically represent the confrontational relationship between nature and artificiality, strength and weakness, and black and white, are displayed on online platforms and in the 3D space of the metaverse.
