ActZero Dune Highlight (2022)
미디어 아티스트 듀오 방앤리는 2021년부터 탄소중립(net-zero)을 향한 예술가의 철학이자 예술 실천, 기후행동을 보여주는 액트제로(ActZero) 연작을 선보이고 있습니다. 지난해 제주도 서귀포시 노지 일대에서의 ‘액트제로 노지(ActZero Noji)‘ 수행에 이어, 올해 충청남도 태안군 신두리 해안사구에서 ‘액트제로 사구(ActZero Dune)‘를 실행했습니다.
신두리 해안사구는 국내 최대 규모의 해안사구로 바람이 실어 온 모래가 갯벌과 육지로 이동하면서 해안에 형성된 모래 언덕입니다. 해안선을 따라, 오랜 시간 퇴적작용이 일어나면서 바다와 육지를 이어주는 교량적 기능을 하고, 순환하는 생태계를 유지해 오고 있습니다. 해안사구의 모래 언덕과 습지, 숲 등은 육지와 해양생태계의 완충지역으로 다양한 동식물의 서식지이기도 합니다. 해당화, 갯그령, 갯방풍, 갯메꽃과 순비기나무 등 모래 언덕에 피어있는 염생식물을 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있으며 도마뱀과 종다리, 고라니 외에도 맹꽁이와 금개구리 등 멸종위기 종과 천연기념물 황조롱이도 서식하고 있어 생물 다양성의 보고로 알려져 있습니다. 또한 해안에서 불어오는 바람과 파도를 막아 주거지와 경작지를 보호하고 바닷물이 육지로 스며들어 식수원을 오염시키는 것을 막아주는 자연 방파제 기능을 하고 있습니다.
액트제로 사구(ActZero Dune)에서 방앤리는 해안 개발과 해안 침식으로 점점 그 면적이 줄고 있는 해안사구와 그로 인해 연쇄적인 위협에 노출된 우리의 환경에 주목합니다. 과거에 비해 급격히 줄어든 사구를 배경으로 황량하고 적막한 풍경과 연약한 모습 가운데 여전히 생명이 살아 숨 쉬는 아름다운 사구의 희망을 카메라에 담았습니다.
노지에서의 수행에서와 마찬가지로 친환경 재료인 흙으로 출력한 건축 모형은 사구에서도 등장합니다. 모래 언덕 위에 놓인 작은 집들은 3D 프린팅을 통해 켜켜이 레이어로 쌓이면서 나름 견고한 건축 형태를 갖추고 있지만, 여전히 연약한 구조물입니다. 지구온난화와 기후 위기에 대응하는 작가의 탐구 과정에서 자연과 인공, 강인함과 연약함, 흑과 백 등 대립적인 관계에서 발생하는 모순과 문제의식을 담은 상징적인 모형입니다.
바다와 숲 사이 모래 언덕에서 예술가들은 기후변화 대응이 하나의 작은 발걸음에서 시작될 수 있음을 보여줍니다. 생물 다양성 보존과 환경 복구를 위해 작가들이 전달하고자 하는 메시지는 음성이 배제된 채로 자연에서 채집된 소리로만 채워집니다. 마치 사막에 온 듯한 느낌을 주는 이국적인 풍경의 모래 언덕은 자연이 만들어낸 아름다움을 보여주는 동시에 사라져가는 것에 대한 기록이기도 합니다.
천연기념물로 지정된 사구에서의 촬영은 자연보호를 위해 매우 제한적으로 계획되었지만, 지속 가능하고 창의적인 예술 행위의 기록은 물리적 세계에서 촬영한 사구 풍경을 바탕으로 디지털 트윈으로 제작되어 3D 애니메이션, WebVR 등 새로운 온라인 플랫폼과 3차원 메타버스 공간으로 확장됩니다. 액트제로 사구(ActZero Dune)의 프로젝트 영상은 개더링 모스(Gathering Moss) 플랫폼을 통해 발표되며 액트제로 홈페이지와 소셜 미디어 채널에서 관람할 수 있습니다.
Media artist duo Bang & Lee have been presenting artistic philosophy and practice, and climate action towards net zero or carbon neutral, through the ActZero series since 2021. ‘ActZero Noji‘ was held out in the open in Seogwipo, Jeju Island last year, followed this year by ‘ActZero Dune‘, held on the Sinduri Coastal Dunes in Taean, South Chungcheong Province.
The Sinduri Coastal Sand Dunes are the largest coastal sand dunes in Korea, formed from the sand driven by the wind along the shore and on to the tidal flats and land. Sediment has built up along the coast over a prolonged period, functioning as a bridge connecting the sea and the land, and maintaining a cyclical ecosystem. The area’s dunes, wetlands, and forests serve as a buffer zone between the ecosystems of the land and sea, and are also habitats for a variety of animals and plants. Salt-tolerant plants such as the sweetbrier rose, sea wheatgrass, beach silvertop, beach morning, and beach vitex are commonly found blooming on the dunes, and lizards, larks, water deer, as well as endangered species such as the boreal digging frog and the Korean golden frog, and kestrels (a designated national treasure) also live here, making them a renowned biodiversity hot spot. In addition, they act as a natural breakwater, blocking the wind and waves blowing in from the coast, protecting residential areas and agricultural land, and preventing seawater from penetrating inland and contaminating drinking water sources.
In ActZero Dune, Bang & Lee draw their attention to the serial threats to the coastal dunes, whose area is gradually decreasing due to coastal development and coastal erosion, and our environment. While the beautiful dunes are now drastically diminished in size, the camera has captured the hope that is still alive and breathing for this bleak and desolate landscape despite its fragile appearance.
Architectural models printed from earth, an eco-friendly material, appear among the sand dunes, as they also had done in ActZero Noji. The small houses on top of the dunes have been built layer by layer using 3D printing, giving them a sturdy architectural form, but they are still fragile structures. In the artists’ process of exploring how to respond to global warming and climate crisis, these models are symbolic of contradictions such as nature and artificiality, strength and weakness, and black and white, and they are also symbolic of the problems whose awareness they raise.
Among the sand dunes between the sea and the forest, the artists show that with one small step a response to climate change can begin. The messages the artists want to deliver about biodiversity preservation and environmental restoration are filled only with voiceless sounds collected from nature. The exotic landscape of sand dunes, which makes you feel as if you are in a desert, reveal the beauty that nature creates, while at the same time they are a record of what is disappearing.
The plan for filming them was restrictive in order to protect the environment of the sand dunes, which are designated as natural monuments, but with this record of sustainable and creative artistic activity a digital twin was created based on the dune landscape photographed in the physical world, to be expanded to new online platforms such as 3D animation and WebVR and to the three-dimensional space of the metaverse.
